QUOTE
#1
"The
identity of any human can be specified by using, singly or in combination, many
different universal criteria, e.g. sex, age, religion. However, in the modern,
political world human beings are automatically identified with a country, and
national identity is generally established by place of birth or place of
residence.”
I picked this quotes because it is the first sentence
of Roberts’s text. I liked the way he starts because we are all categorized.
It’s true; this “political world” identifies everyone since everyone has the
same common thing, we are all born somewhere. I can relate this with Puerto
Rico since I was born there; therefore my identity belongs to Puerto Rico.

#2
"The
notion of identity in human society is based on two fundamental factors-the
perception of sameness/difference and the instinctiveness of man to be a social
being. “
This second quote for me was one of the main themes
of Robert’s text. He specifies how the identity of one is unique and it’s
created because of the perception and the instinctiveness of the human being.
The perception and instinctiveness of one is different from the rest and that
is one of the things that I love about the human being. The way in where there
are so many people in this world but each perception and instinctiveness is
different makes one original. Different people can have the same perception
of something but it still makes it original in them by the way they imagine
it. I can relate this with my connection in Puerto Rico. I’m not the only
person that was born in Puerto Rico, and I like the way how we were all born in
the same island but our perception and instinctiveness of things are not the
same, since they are influenced by other major things, for example, the different
ways our parents raise us.

#3
“The giving
of a specific name to a group is preceded by the perception or assumption of
sameness across a number of individuals and the perception or assumption
between them or others. Naming of a group, however, can be done by the group
itself or by others, which means that a name may be reelection of a shared
experience of sameness across individuals, or on the other hand, it may be
projection of beliefs, values and desires on to people without them having any
prior consciousness of identity.”
The third quote is Robert’s way of explaining how the
name to a group is chosen. He explains how it is a social event in where groups
of people classify themselves or even others to identify themselves or others.
Also he explains how many common bonds are the influences in which people classify themselves. I can relate this to Puerto Rico since in here we all have a
common bond and that is we all live in Puerto Rico and we like to call us “El Puertorro”. It is a name we put to the Puerto Ricans as a sign of being proud to our home which is the same one.
